NINDS Competitive Postdoctoral Fellowships

Eligibility and Application for the Award
Candidates must have a PhD or MD degree. US citizenship is not required. For the recruitment award, candidates can apply before coming to NINDS or within the first two years. Highest priority will be given to fellows in their first postdoctoral training experience. An NINDS study section will evaluate the candidate, the proposed basic or clinical research plan, the training plan, and the suitability of the host laboratory (Lab/Branch/Section or Unit) for carrying out the proposed research and the training plan. The award period is for three years.    Awardees are required to submit a 1-2 page progress report at the end of  each year of the project . Reports should be sent to Peggy Rollins, OSD.

For each receipt date one application per sponsoring Principal Investigator may be submitted.

Prior approval by Scientific Director required to write an application: A postdoctoral fellow interested in applying for a NINDS Competitive Postdoctoral Fellowship in a NINDS lab must obtain approval from the Scientific Director before writing the application. The request must be made by email through the current or proposed NINDS Principal Investigator mentor and include the applicant’s CV, an abstract of the proposed work and a rationale for why the lab is suitable for carrying out the proposed research and training. The request should be sent to Dr. Alan Koretsky with a copy to Peggy Rollins.

Candidate Selection
An NINDS Extramural study section will be responsible for evaluating the initial application from the candidates and will forward reviews including scores to the Scientific Director. There are three application receipt dates a year. A committee of intramural scientists from NINDS and other institutes will determine whether a third year of funding is appropriate and make recommendations to the Scientific Director of NINDS.

Amount of Award
The stipend provided with the award will be approximately $5,000 greater than that for a fellow with the same level of experience. The operating budget of the mentoring Principle Investigator will be supplemented to cover the fellow's research activities.
